Product Information

Our beautiful and superb new & natural softwood sleepers, often referred to as railway sleepers, allow you to create stunning garden features and redesign areas of your garden simply but to great effect.

Our brown 2.4m x 100mm x 200mm sleepers are pressure treated with Tanalith E for a long life (in normal use 10-15 years) and Tanatone for a warm brown colour. Over time your softwood Railway sleepers will gradually fade to a silvery grey, this is a natural part of the ageing process with softwood timber. This provides a beautiful and natural looking feature in your garden but if you wish to keep your railway sleepers as new and provide better protection we suggest an annual brown treatment which is available on our site.

Our railway sleepers are easy to use, if you wish to cut and reduce the overall length you must treat the newly exposed surface with an appropriate timber treatment to ensure your sleeper is protected, you can buy this from Gardoo.

If you wish to fix your sleepers we have two sizes of timber screws available, 6.5mm x 150mm and 6.5mm x 250mm, very easy to use with the magnetic hex drive bit we offer. These screws are designed to work hand in hand with all your sleeper projects and provide a long lasting fixing.

For practical applications softwood sleepers represent a simple and effective solution to creating retaining walls. They also work very well when used to construct garden steps and raised beds for vegetable and flower growing.

Treated railway sleepers can also be used for creating unique garden furniture, outdoor seating, garden benches and tables. We have many customers who create fantastic BBQ & entertaining areas with railway sleepers.

Sleepers also look wonderful as an edging for vegetable gardens, parterres, patios, paths and driveways.

We do not recommend the use of our brown treated sleepers for building ponds where the timber surface has contact with the pond water.

Our brown railway sleepers are also available as 1.2m x 100mm x 200mm, 2.4m x 96mm x 196mm planned and bevelled and 2.4m x 120mm x 240mm.

As a natural product, all our sleepers are unique, there may be slight colour variations, splits, knots and wanes and due to overall timber density each sleeper can vary slightly in overall weight. Most of our 2.4m x 100mm x 200mm brown softwood sleepers weigh between 20 & 30kg

So in summing up our sleepers can be used for many projects including :

·        Retaining walls

·        Steps

·        Drive, lawn and path edging

·        Raised vegetable and flower beds

·        Garden structures and furniture

·        Pergolas, garden arches and arbours

·        Garden sculptures

·        Decking

For children’s sand pits and play areas we recommend the use of our smooth Planned and bevelled railway sleepers to help provide extra protection

The Possibilities are endless, so get creative and have fun.

Questions and Answers

Are Gardoo railway sleepers from Sustainable sources?

Yes, we care about the environment and the illegal timber trade and we are proud to say all our sleepers are from sustainable sources.

What is the treatment to ensure long life?

Our brown sleepers are treated with Tanalith E to provide a long life, on average treated softwood sleepers last between 10-15 years in most situations, oak sleepers have a much longer life of between 25 and 35 years depending on use and situation. No matter the treatment softwood sleepers are a natural product and will overtime deteriate, you can extend this life span with an annual treatment of preservative. But remember you must treat any areas you have cut to ensure long life. For the finished colouring our gardoo sleepers are treated with Tanatone for a warm brown colour which overtime will fade to a natural silvery grey.

Will I be able to lift them

The 2.4m x 100mm x 200mm brown weigh between 20kg & 30kg, we always advice that you should always lift sleepers with two people to avoid injury.

Which sleepers should I use?

The choice is totally up to you, softwood sleepers are a fantastic choice for most projects around the garden but our Oak railway sleepers being a hardwood will last much longer than softwood sleeper’s but they are considerably more expensive and much heavier making them much harder to handle.

If you are using sleepers in areas such a children’s sandpits or seating areas it is better to use our planned and bevelled softwood sleepers which are available in a green or brown finish.

Are the fixing screws strong?

Yes they are designed for timber structure fixing

Why do they have splits, knots and wanes?

Timber sleepers are a natural product and will always have some type of blemishes, part of the drying process with timber will create splits and twisting but this is part of the natural look when using sleepers.

How are they delivered?

Our sleepers are delivered by various pallet network operators, they are packed on a non-returnable timber pallet, more information is available under the delivery section.

Finish:  Sawn
Material: Softwood
Colour: Brown*
Size: 2.4m x 100mm x 200mm
Weight: 29kg average weight (as a natural wood product, weight can vary depending on a number of factors, so actual weight may be higher or lower than this).
Treatment: Pressure-treated with Tanalith E and coloured with Tanatone. Tanalith E is a water-based wood preservative that contains copper and proven organic biocides.  Tanalith E pressure-treated timber has a long-term protection against fungal and insect attack when used both in and out of contact with the ground, in appropriate applications.

Please note:

*As part of the natural weathering and ageing process, these brown sleepers will gradually mellow to a dark brown/ grey colour.  This process will take approximately 3-6 months for sleepers that are used outdoors, with the sun helping to bleach the wood.

This weathering process does not indicate any loss of preservative protection.

However, if you wish to retain the original colour of your sleepers, we recommend that you retreat your sleepers by applying a stain/preservative or varnish before the original colour fades.  Continue this retreatment annually to maintain that colour.

The stated dimensions of our sleepers refer to the finished size.

As a natural product, each sleeper is unique.  This means that there may be colour variations, splits, knots and wanes.

As a processed wood product, please be aware that sleepers may contain splinters.  Care should be taken in handling sleepers and we recommend wearing gloves when handling.
